Do you ever get really dry skin, have eczema, or any other skin condition that needs extra care? Creating your own oatmeal bath recipe to soothe your skin may be easier than you thought!
Oatmeal, itself, is derived from oat grains that are crushed, rolled, or ground. Most people recognize it as a breakfast cereal when in fact it is utilized currently in the skin care industry as a moisturizing agent and alternative to abrasive soaps for those with skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and more.
Oatmeal can be finely ground by using a food processor, blender or coffee grinders. In 2005, there was even an article written for dermatology addressing the use of natural ingredients with colloidal oatmeal being one of them.
Did you know even the Romans from ancient times used oatmeal for various skin care?
"Studies have shown that colloidal oatmeal binds to the skin and provides a protective barrier against irritants. It contains water-binding polysaccharides (long chain sugars) and hydrocolloids that hold moisture against the skin allowing it to act as an emollient. The fats contained in oatmeal also add to its emollient activity, which can improve the itch of dry skin. Oatmeal acts as a buffering agent that can help maintain the skin’s normal pH."
As you can now understand, oatmeal is a very skin healing and moisturizing ingredient that when introduced to a bath can have a pronounced effect. Oatmeal is so great for dry skin, I use an organic oat flour in my Kaolin Clay mask! It is also great for sunburns and bug bites.
Additionally, since oatmeal is a natural cleanser to the skin, there is no need to wash with soap following a bath using oatmeal. In fact, some skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis do better if you cleanse with non-soap cleansers such as this type of bath.
3/4 cup oats
1/2 cup baking soda
1/4 cup coconut milk powder (or other milk powder of your choice)
TBSP Frankincense hydrosol
Optional: nourishing carrier oil like Tamanu
To Use: Run your bath water at full force and sprinkle just a ¼ cup of oatmeal bath mixture underneath the running bath water. Add hydrosol. Stir any oatmeal that might settle at the bottom into the bath. Soak in the oatmeal bath for at least 20 minutes or more.
For optional carrier: Measure ¼ cup of oatmeal bath mixture and add carrier. Mix together and add to running bath water. Then add hydrosol. Take caution when getting out as tub may be slippery.
