You might be asking yourself, “What the heck is Rhododendron?” Or perhaps you are thinking of the tree that grows in the US. If you are thinking either of these things, then the Rhododendron Essential Oil Spotlight is one that may have you thinking you need this oil!
From the Plant to the Bottle
The plant that we obtain Rhododendron essential oil from is a small shrub with beautiful flowers and dark green leaves. It is gathered by the high Himalayan people as a sacred fragrant substance to be "burnt in offering to please and harmonize the earthly divine, especially local earth spirits."
It is known as Anthopogan in the Nepals and is also their National Flower. Its botanical name is Rhododendron anthopogan. It is commonly referred to as Rhododendron.
Before distilling, it is collected at high elevations in the Himalayans by hand after hiking miles up the mountain. With the recent popularity of this plant, it is important to really know the distiller, how the distiller supports the locals, and whether they make ethical choices in just how much is harvested.
Once the plant material as been gathered into a basket that is typically carried on the back, it is carried back down the mountain to the still. Then it is processed, and steam distilled to produce a beautiful oil.
An Aroma Like No Other
Rhododendron essential oil has a slightly balsamic aroma that sweetly offers floral and herbaceous notes. This aroma is different than most floral essential oils and is best described as an exotic and delicate one that I find pleasant and not overpowering.
