Often, this is essential oil is overlooked. After this Sweet Orange Essential Oil Spotlight, you will see it a little differently.
Sweet Orange Can Be Confusing…
Have you ever heard of Wild Orange? What about Blood Orange? Did you know that Sweet Orange, Wild Orange, and Blood Orange all have the same botanical name Citrus Sinensis? If you are scratching your head right now like I was when I first started researching, hopefully this will clarify things for you.
Each of these share the same botanical name but have different common names for a reason. If you look at where each of these are from, the common names are sweet orange. In fact, early in the Spring of 2019 I placed an order with one of my distillers in Southern Italy for Sweet Orange – a name he had given it. However, when I got it and began pouring, I noticed it had a dark orange to red color. Upon reaching out to him, I found that it was actually Blood Orange.
To help clear things up, Sweet Orange is grown in the US. Blood Orange is grown in Southern Italy. Wild Orange is also grown and harvested in “wild” orchards in Northern Italy. They share very similar chemistry, similar tastes, similar organoleptics, and the same botanical name. Yet, based on their growing areas produce slightly different colored essential oils and fruits and have different common names.
An Oil to Support You
Remember when I told you it is often overlooked? That is because outside of using it around kids to create a nurturing and happy environment, it gets forgotten about. In general, it is a fantastic oil that is bright, uplifting, and adds a happy note to many emotional support blends. BUT, there is so much more to this oil!
So how else can you use it? Sweet Orange essential oil is amazing in digestive support blends. No, really! It’s chemistry and anecdotal evidence shows you that is can be a great antispasmodic oil. So if you eat to much, it may help in soothing your tummy – remember this because Thanksgiving is always around the corner!
You can also add it to muscle rub blends to help soothe cramping muscles or use it in blends for hormonal cramping. Trust me – I have used it this way before and it is not only soothing but relaxing.
Relaxing… I know you may be thinking to yourself that it can’t be relaxing, but it is! Try it in a lovely body or foot massage the next time you get a chance. Or better yet, put a few drops in your diffuser after work. Not only will it uplift your spirits after a hard day, but it will help ease your mind into being present. If you have kids, running your diffuser after school can help them destress and relax, too!
The best part about orange essential oil? It is fantastic at supporting the immune system when you are feeling under the weather. I use this one a LOT for my kids when I make blend feel better blends for them.
Seems like a pretty amazing essential oil that can be versatile, right?

Try smelling the aromas of the sweet orange essential oil with each oil as a pair from the caps. So, holding the sweet orange and the bergamot cap side by side, inhale sweeping both from side to side under each nostril so you can identify if you like the to blended together. Also, you might consider whether each oil you are using is a top note, middle note or base note (I consider Sweet Orange a middle note).
