Recently, I was contacted by a dog owner with a very serious concern. One that I want to share because using essential oils and other aromatics with your dog can be helpful in some cases but others not so much.
In this case she asked me this: I have a puppy whom I’m 100% positive contracted giardia, what do you recommend I give to her?
As a fellow dog owner, I know how difficult it can be when our fur babies aren’t feeling well and Giardia is definitely something to be concerned about.
Because your fur baby can become quite ill due to dehydration and other things as a result of contracting Giardia, it’s best to reach out to your veterinarian to confirm diagnosis and get him or her on the appropriate medication. Once your fur baby has been diagnosed and put on medication, he or she will need plenty of fluids and rest.
To help support your puppy resting you can spray his or her bed with a gentle hydrosol like Lavender or German Chamomile. Using essential oils when a small animal's immune system is already taxed can be even more taxing.
The goal when using aromatics for animal isn't necessarily to "treat" or "cure" something. It's to support what their body is already trying to do. In this case, the best method of support after getting veterinary care would be to support the sleep cycle so the animal's immune system can do it's best work.
I hope this helps you in understanding how to help your fur baby in this scenario!
