Summer shaving skincare
Summer is here and that means shorts, swimsuits, and cute summer dresses for some females. This of course means more frequent shaving. If you are like me, shaving is an everyday affair. If you aren't but you want smooth and moisturized skin after shaving, you will want to keep reading!
I pride myself on having really great, soft, and silky smooth skin that is always moisturized. Notice I said moisturized - this is key! When we shave, the basic nature of the action removes our dead skin cells and along with it our skins serebum (natural moisturizer), not just the hair on our legs. Although a lot of store brands are more convenient, I have found in the past, they just don't provide enough moisture for the daily ritual of shaving.
If you have these basic ingredients in your home, the recipe below will be an amazing one for you to try out for your next "Do It Yourself" skincare supplement.
Ingredients & Other needed items
- 2 ounces organic unrefined coconut oil
- 2 ounces organic unrefined Shea butter
- .65 ounce organic jojoba oil
- .65 ounce liquid castile soap
- 25 drops Geranium pure essential oil (optional)
- Pot to boil water
- Glass Pyrex to make a type of double boiler
- Glass stir rod
- Digital Kitchen Scale
- Containers to hold measured ingredients
- Medium to large bowl
- Hand immersion blender with wire wisk
- Container for finished product (with lid)
Place about 1.5 inches of water into your pot.
Set the stove for a medium setting.
Set glass Pyrex inside pot.
Measure all of your ingredients except your optional essential oil. If you choose to utilize another oil, use one that is skin nourishing.
Pour everything into the glass Pyrex container EXCEPT essential oil.
Stir continuously on your medium setting. The medium setting allows the butter, oils, and soaps to blend together without removing the beneficial properties of the butter or oils. Using a hiring setting can cause ingredients to warm too quickly and may not be as beneficial.
Once everything is blended together, remove from heat drying the glass Pyrex container.
Carefully pour the ingredients into your medium to large bowl and set inside the refrigerator for about ten minutes to cool slightly.
After cooling, remove and add your essential oil if you choose. The organic ingredients do have a wonderful smell all by themselves so they really do not need a pure essential oil added to the mixture.
Using your hand immersion blender (or any other hand held blender), start on the lowest setting to whip your ingredients working your way up to the highest. You will whip this for about 2-3 minutes.
When it is done whipping, transfer the ingredients a final time into your container with a lid for use.
Important Notes Regarding Use
This shaving cream does not lather and should be applied as a thin layer. The texture is a cross between shaving oil and shaving.
Take precautions to avoid getting any water or other possible adulterants into the mixture. The ingredients on their own have a relatively long and stable shelf life, but this can be changed by accidentally adding anything else-especially during use!
This DIY product can make the tub/shower floor slippery. It only takes about a quarter-sized amount for each leg. Using small amounts as needed can help prevent making your floors slippery.
Thanks for reading! I hope you have as much fun with this as I have.
