Common Name: Clove Bud

Latin Name: Eugenia caryophyllata

Aroma: This a wonderful warm, exotic, spicy, and sweet essential oil that can be used as a top or middle note in most blends. This is a very playful and energetic oil so only a small amount needs to be used when blending.

Blends with: Allspice, Basil, Bergamot, Black Pepper, Black Spruce, Blood Orange, Douglas-fir, Cinnamon Bark, Clary Sage, Cypress, Ginger, Grapefruit, Alligator Juniper, Nutmeg, Sweet Orange, Peppermint, Rose absolute, Scotch Pine, Virginia Cedarwood, and Ylang Ylang.

Energetic qualities: Uplifts mood with its warm, spicy aroma and can be somewhat energizing offering a warmth and protectiveness to your core. 

Recommended applications: Topical application using safe dilution ratios and diffusing.

    Aromatherapist notes: I just love using this oil during the holidays in warming blends or those that support circulation. It can also make a wonderful addition to blends that promote self confidence.

    Safety Data: Non-toxic. May cause skin and mucous membrane irritation or sensitization.  Avoid using Clove with children 2 or under or on any sensitive or damaged skin. Eugenol (Clove) is a potent prostaglandin inhibitor, and should be avoided by people with significant renal (kidney) disease. Eugenol is not contraindicated for pregnancy, however, because of the antiplatelet aggregation activity, it’s cautioned against breastfeeding, as it could pass into breast milk.

    Other considerations:

    • Clove Bud essential oil is high in phenols and can be irritating to the mucous membrane tissues and sensitive skin. Therefore, it is recommended that it is always used in low dilutions for diffusion blends and topical applications.
    • Recommended daily topical use of a maximum of 0.5%.
    • Do not place on broken skin. 
    • Oral use is cautioned for individuals taking pthidine, MAOIs or SSRIs, anticoagulant medication, major surgery, ulcers, hemophilia, and other bleeding disorders.
